For more than 67 million years, the Tyrannosaurus rex known as Gus rested beneath what is now Hell Creek Ranch & Cattle in western South Dakota. Hidden beneath the prairie and preserved by time, Gus remained undiscovered until his remarkable excavation brought him back into the light.

A World-Famous Discovery
The Hell Creek Formation is recognized around the world as one of the richest and most important fossil-bearing regions on Earth. It has produced some of the most significant dinosaur discoveries ever made, including numerous Tyrannosaurus rex specimens.
Among them is Gus, a spectacular T. rex excavated from the very land that is now Hell Creek Ranch & Cattle.
Where Gus Called Home
Although Hell Creek Ranch & Cattle is now home to Black Angus cattle and the wide-open beauty of western South Dakota, this landscape tells a much older story.
Sixty-seven million years ago, this region looked nothing like it does today. Rivers, forests, and floodplains stretched across the land, creating an ideal habitat for dinosaurs including the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex.
For millions of years, Gus remained buried beneath these hills, waiting to be discovered.
From the Prairie to the World Stage
After an extensive excavation and years of careful preparation, Gus became one of the most talked-about Tyrannosaurus rex specimens in the world.
In July 2026, Gus crossed the auction block at Sotheby's in New York, where the fossil sold for an astounding $50.13 million, capturing worldwide attention and introducing millions of people to the remarkable history of Hell Creek Ranch & Cattle.
